We’ve all heard it before. We all love to mention it as we enjoy a glass of wine at dinner and at parties. The idea has been stated and passed around so often, that it has become embedded into our culture as a fact. But, is it actually true? Can wine be healthy for us? We would all like it to be true! Let’s take a look at some of the facts:
Wine and Cholesterol
It has been long believed that wine can be beneficial for the heart, but more recent studies have demonstrated that it may be also beneficial for the blood. Wine seems to raise the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) while lowering LDL (bad cholesterol). Furthermore, phenols (a chemical compound in wine) help to protect the arteries from the bad cholesterol.
Resveratrol is a compound located in grape’s skin, more prominent in red wine. Resveratrol has been vaunted as a miracle cure in recent years. Though the extent of the health benefits is still being debated, it has been accepted that resveratrol has some health benefits. Resveratrol has been found to potentially lower LDL, help prevent blood clots, and may possibly have properties to help prevent cancer.
We usually associate alcohol with diminished brain activity. It can actually be the opposite with red wine. Studies have shown that your memory retention and creativity actually improves after drinking wine.
This is a new one, but some studies have demonstrated that drinking red wine can actually kill bacteria on your teeth and help to keep them clean.
Lower the Risk of Stroke
Some studies have shown that wine drinkers have a lower risk of stroke when compared to those who drink beer and hard liquor.
Other health benefits of wine that have been studied include stronger bones, reduced depression, reduces risks of dementia, better eyes, and diabetes prevention.
Despite all the potential health benefits of wine, it is not a license to drink copious amounts every night. Overindulging will negate and destroy any of the health benefits that you could derive from drinking wine. Just like anything else, it should be taken in moderation. Currently, the standard is one glass a night for women and two for men.
Of course, we don’t only drink wine for our good health, there are many other benefits to wine. From the taste, the history, the culture and the social aspect, the wine offers a different experience for each person and for each wine. Plus, an event just isn’t quite right without wine.
